Five

Before Dinner Mints

Monie's schedule was booked solid in the weeks following the event. During the day, she would work on the television show, but after she won her award, her calendar for her mobile makeup business exploded. No one in the crew saw her thanks to a destination wedding one weekend and appointment after appointment. I respected her grind and didn't complain, although I desperately wanted to see her. Mercifully, she answered when I called her at night, blessing me with her voice and phone sex a couple of those nights. It was nothing compared to seeing her though, so when she finally got a moment to breathe, I invited her out to spend a little time with me and have some fun.

Arriving at her place more than an hour before the time I'd instructed her to be ready, I handed her two wrapped packages and stepped inside of her living room, closing and locking the door behind me. As she stood there, staring down at the pink boxes, I lifted her chin to drop a kiss on her lips and made my way over to the sofa. It wasn't until I sat down that Monie looked up from her gifts and found my eyes.

"Vick…what's this?"

"Open 'em and see."

I laughed as she shook her head.

"Why not?"

Crossing the room, she sat on the ottoman and rested the packages on her knees.

"Just tell me," she whined.

I was shaking my head before she even finished her sentence.

"Stop bein' a punk and open the damn boxes."

Shooting me a glare, she flipped me the bird as she set the larger box on the floor by her feet and brought the smaller one to her ear before giving it a shake. It was like Christmas all over again as an uncontrollable grin tugged her lips upward. Ripping at the glittery paper, it didn't take her long to reveal the black shoe box inside, and the moment that she noticed the logo, Monie's eyes jerked up to me.

"What is this, Vick?"

"Man. Open it."

She narrowed her eyes at me, but I gave her a silly look and bit my lip, not saying another word. Realizing that I wasn't going to give her an answer, Monie turned back to the box in her lap and lifted the lid. Slowly, her lips curved into a surprised smile, and I expected her to look at me and ask me once again what it was that she was looking at, but instead, she set the box on the floor and picked up the larger box. This time, she took her time removing the wrapping from this box, running her hands over the paper, probably taking in the slight bumps and grooves of the embossing. Once unwrapped, she lifted the white lid and set it on the floor next to the first box. Her brows furrowed, and she shot me a bewildered glance.

There were no words this time, she just turned back to the box and lifted its contents into the air. It was a long-sleeved jumpsuit in the same ice blue color as the dress she'd worn to the event.
